Mooring scenarios
Vessel length and berth environment: The length of the mooring cable is usually 1.5 to 2.5 times the length of the vessel. For example, for a 100-meter-long vessel, the mooring cable length is about 150-250 meters. This is because when the vessel is docked, the cable connects the hull to the mooring bollard on the pier, and sufficient length must be reserved to accommodate the vessel's movement due to tides, wind, and waves (lateral/longitudinal displacement), preventing the cable from being stretched tight and breaking.
Mooring method: Single-line mooring (one cable fixed directly) requires a shorter length; multi-line cross mooring (such as bow, stern, and breast lines working together) requires longer lengths to ensure balanced tension among all cables.
Pier facilities: If the mooring bollards on the pier are far from the hull (such as deep-water piers), the cable length needs to be extended to cover the distance; if the berth is narrow, the length can be appropriately shortened.
Towing scenarios
Distance between tug and towed vessel: The towing cable length should be determined based on towing speed and the openness of the sea area. Low-speed nearshore towing (such as moving vessels within a port) usually uses cable lengths of 50-100 meters; offshore high-speed towing requires cable lengths increased to 200-500 meters, using the elasticity of the long cable to buffer wave impacts and avoid excessive instantaneous tension.
Emergency towing: In cases such as vessel loss of control, the towing cable length must be sufficiently long (usually over 300 meters) to ensure the tug has enough operational space to adjust direction.
Emergency and special scenarios
Emergency cables (such as those used to secure lifeboats when abandoning ship) must cover the distance from the hull to the water surface, with an additional 10-20 meters reserved to facilitate lifeboat release.
Polar or ice area operations: Cable length needs to be longer to accommodate the additional displacement caused by the vessel bumping in ice.
Operational convenience
Excessively long cables increase difficulty in handling (especially manual operation) and may entangle with ship equipment; cables that are too short cannot meet basic connection needs. Therefore, the length must balance "meeting safety requirements" and "ease of operation," usually determined by crew experience combined with the vessel manual.
